It is perhaps the only movie that is more 90s than the entirety of VH1s I Love The 90s series. That’s right, a mere three years after Janusz Kaminski made sure that Vanilla Ice’s Stussy shirt was properly lit during the construction site frolicking scene, he was finding the right lens to shoot Liam Neeson’s “I could have got more” speech in Schindler’s List. This is because the director of photography went on to do the cinematography for films such as Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and Lincoln. Or perhaps they are just stunned that in a movie whose entire reason for existence is the star had a wildly popular album, none of the songs from said wildly popular album make an appearance. The sleepy little town that Vanilla rides his motorcycle through is not prepared for his chillaxed baditude and funky fresh fashions. At this moment, we will point out for the record that his hilarious real name is Robert Van Winkle. The only stretch he gives his acting abilities is playing a character named “Johnny” instead of his real name. It is important to keep this in mind while you watch Cool As Ice, because at some point in time, you will inevitably shriek at the TV, “Who thought this was a good idea? How did this happen? What stands out the most are some of the wide shots that take in the location, especially in the desert scenes. As for director David Kellogg, he would go on to denounce Cool as Ice.įor fans of Vanilla Ice, Cool as Ice arrives on Blu-ray for the very first time and if you like it, I will say that the transfer looks great. That is thanks to Janusz Kaminski who would wind up going on to work with Steven Spielberg on numerous features, including being the cinematographer on the upcoming West Side Story remake. If I can think of a single positive thing to say about Cool as Ice, I would say that it is definitely, a very well shot terrible film. Of course, Johnny will be saving the day.Ĭool as Ice is predictable and I have a feeling the actual trained actors, like Michael Gross who plays Kathy’s father, were not all that thrilled being in a film where the lead has absolutely no acting talent. So, Johnny doesn’t just beat up Nick and his friends (deservingly, so), but it turns out that Kathy’s parents are in the witness protection program and her father’s dangerous past has come back to collect. There needs to be some danger to show how much of a badass he can be. Obviously, a simple romance just won’t do for Vanilla Ice. Is is classically bad, but absolutely unforgettable. I will admit, one of the best corny lines of all time is spewed here when Johnny tells Kathy to “Drop that zero and get with the hero”. Of course, she is going to fall for Johnny anyways. As soon as they arrive in the town, Johnny takes a liking to Kathy (Kristin Minter), who happens to already have a boyfriend, the local popular kid, Nick (John Newton). The crew are forced to hang out in a small town while the bike is repaired.
